With profound sadness, we announce the death of Alwin S. Johnston, Jr., affectionately known as Al or Big Al, who passed away on September 27, 2023. Born in Fitchburg, MA on July 7, 1936, Alwin spent his life radiating wit and talent, his resilient spirit inspiring those around him. A gifted metallurgist, he retired from Simonds Saw & Steel in 1990, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of innovation and perseverance.
Alwin was a man of many passions. An accomplished athlete, he filled his time playing tennis, cross-country skiing, badminton, softball, and basketball. His love for sports cars was matched only by his fascination with coin collecting and Sudoku. His intellect was reflected not only in his hobbies but in his academic achievements, including a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Northeastern University and a Gold "F" for academics from Fitchburg High School. Albert Einstein once said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer." This quote perfectly encapsulates Alwin's approach to life. Whether it was meticulously planning his investments in the stock market or committing to a complex Sudoku puzzle, Alwin's resilience and smarts were always at the forefront.
Alwin is survived by his brother David Johnston and sister-in-law Nancy, his sister Joyce Robinson, and his nephews Eric Robinson, Scott Robinson, and Erik Kamppuri. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alwin Johnston Sr., and Helen Johnston.
We invite you to leave your memories of Alwin and upload photos to his memorial page. Your stories and pictures will serve as a lasting tribute to a man who made an indelible impact on so many lives. His laughter, intelligence, and enduring spirit will forever be remembered.
