Ann L. Shoesmith

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ann L. Shoesmith, who passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026. Born Ann Lillian Miller on October 1, 1940, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Ann lived a life defined by creativity, vibrancy, thoughtfulness, and an unwavering commitment to preserving her German heritage.

Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Glen Shoesmith, with whom she shared 33 years of marriage; her parents, Charles and Frieda Miller; and her younger brother, Chuck Miller.

She leaves behind her loving family, including her sister-in-law, Denise Miller; her niece, Katherine Miller; her nephew, Chuck Miller and his wife, Joyce; her great-nephews, Roby Malinowski, Charlie Miller, and Scott Miller; many close cousins; and many dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

She is also survived by her dear friend and closest companion, Stephen Fontaine, whose friendship brought her great joy. They enjoyed spending time together on frequent outings and shared many wonderful memories, including special times with Stephen's grandchildren, who adored Ann. Stephen remained a devoted friend, visiting Ann often throughout her later years. He and his grandchildren became a cherished part of Ann's extended family.

Ann graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1958 and continued her education at Fitchburg State College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. Her education prepared her for a fulfilling career as a third grade teacher at School Street elementary school in Gardner, Massachusetts. Beyond the classroom, Ann's creativity found expression through her many artistic pursuits. Her artistic talent was evident in the many paintings she created, often depicting coastal scenes, charming New England settings, and favorite vacation destinations that reflected her love of nature. A gifted writer as well, Ann delighted family and friends by composing heartfelt poems for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. She found great joy in spending countless hours gardening, nurturing flowers and creating beautiful landscapes. An enthusiastic sports fan, she especially loved football and passionately cheered for her beloved New England Patriots.

Above all else, Ann treasured her family and devoted countless hours to fostering and celebrating her German-American heritage.

Among her many contributions, Ann:

* Served as President of the Associated German Societies of New England from 2012 to 2015.

* Was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz) in 2013, one of Germany's highest civilian honors, recognizing her lifelong dedication to preserving German cultural heritage and fostering friendship between Germany and the United States.

* Participated each year in the German-Italian Prisoner of War Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Fort Devens Cemetery.

* Established an annual tradition of purchasing and distributing winter coats to children in need on behalf of the German Club.

Ann was full of life and exuberance, always embracing every opportunity to laugh, celebrate, and spend time with those she loved. She formed lasting friendships wherever she went and had a remarkable gift for engaging people in conversation. She also enjoyed hosting gatherings where she shared her enthusiasm for Tiara Glassware and House of Lloyd Christmas Around the World products, creating lasting memories with family and friends. Ann made her home in Swansea, Massachusetts, where she remained active in her community and devoted to the people and traditions she loved.

Ann will be remembered not only for her many accomplishments, but for the warmth and enthusiasm with which she lived each day. Her legacy lives on in the traditions she worked so passionately to preserve, the art she created, and the many lives she enriched through her service and friendship. Though she will be deeply missed, Ann's joyful spirit, creativity, generosity, and unwavering dedication to family and friends will always be remembered.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Ann's life and share memories in her honor between 10:00 AM and Noon on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with a service to follow at the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
