Chatmon Houston, Jr.

Calling hours will be held in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg on Thursday, April 7 from 10-11am. The funeral service will begin at 11am. Burial will follow in the MA Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon. The family has requested no flowers, instead please make a donation to the NAACP in his name. Chatmon Houston, Jr., 91, of Leominster, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2022 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Chatmon was born in Louisville, Mississippi on May 23, 1930 one of nine children born to the late Chatmon and Maude (Staibling) Houston, Sr. After graduating from college, Chatmon entered the U.S. Army. His career lasted 27 years of service during which he was a three time Bronze Star recipient. During that time he was in Special Intelligence, an Instructor at West Point, and worked in Encryption in the Pentagon. His time and work there was varied, and he handled each position, with his finest work. After the service, he went to GE (General Electric) here in Fitchburg for another career spanning more than 20 years. He retired from GE, and continued his radio work with the Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS), a United States Department of Defense sponsored program, established as a separately managed and operated program by the United States Army, and the United States Air Force. Chatmon continued his work with them until his death. Chatmon loved working with the HAM radios and the MARS program, and loved watching his wife, Sherryann, work in the garden and around the yard. Together they had many years of fun and enjoyment in their adventures. Chatmon will be missed by all those who knew and loved him, and shared time with him. He is survived by his loving wife, Sherryann Houston of Leominster, his son, Timothy Houston of NC and stepson Shaquille Belle of Leominster; grandchildren, Ellie Katelyn Houston and Ryan Houston, and Zelina, Leo, and Iker; two sisters, Mary Houston and Lillian Houston, both of Mississippi; many nieces and nephews including Ruthania Hudson and Kevin Jr., of Mississippi Chatmon was predeceased by his daughter Aria Houston in 1999 and his six siblings.
