DONALD E. SLOCUM Obituary Donald E. Slocum, 85, of Ashburnham, Massachusetts, passed away on Memorial Day, May 25th at high noon. Donald was born September 20, 1929, to Emmons and Laura (Haskell) Slocum in New Bedford, MA. Don is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, his high-school sweetheart, Jeannette (Chenel) Slocum, and three children: Steven E. Slocum and his wife Donna Lee of Ashburnham; Peter Slocum and his wife Jennifer of Wethersfield, CT; and Donna Mae Slocum of Ashburnham. He was blessed with eight grandchildren and eight great-grand children. Heather Sedani, her children Drew, Christian, Grace; Steven M. and his wife Talitha; Tyler, his wife Heather and Cru and Ari; Timothy and his wife Julie and Cedar Hannah; Inger Swingforth and husband Andru and Simon and Kingsley; Joshua Hansen; Cullen Slocum and Sean Slocum. Donald was pre-deceased by his parents, four brothers and one sister. In 1948, Don was Captain of the New Bedford High School Football Team and was later elected into the New Bedford High Gridiron Club. In 1954, after serving in the US Army, with his wife and new baby son, he moved to East Hartford, CT. Don worked at Coca Cola in East Hartford for over 30 years, rising from a delivery driver to be Vice President. After retiring in 1988, Don and his wife moved to their dream home in East Dennis, MA on Cape Cod. He loved Cape Cod and spent many hours playing golf with the “Early Birds” at Dennis Pines and Dennis Highlands Golf Clubs and “holding down the sand” at Cold Storage Beach. He was an avid fan of the Patriots and the Red Sox. As Don’s health declined, he and Jeannette moved to a new condo in Ashburnham, MA where he was surrounded by family. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and what they are accomplishing in their lives and the love they gave him. He was a loving, thoughtful, giving and very funny man whose stories were a hoot. He will be missed by all who knew him. Many thanks to Dr. Ted Herwig on Cape Cod; Dr. John Harrington of Winchendon and the Gardner Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) and very special nurse, Susan Lowthers, for her kindness in caring for Don and his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Don’s memory to Gardner VNA, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440. A celebration of Don’s life will be held on June 12, 2015 at Cornerstone Church, 122 Gardner Road – Rt. 140, Winchendon, MA 01475 with calling hours at 10:00am and a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00am. Brandon Funeral Home in Fitchburg, Massachusetts is directing arrangements.
