Dorothy Wemett (“Mama Dot”) passed away on December 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with several health conditions. Born on August 18, 1944, to Michael and Olga Sawchuk, she grew up in Cohasset, Massachusetts, where she graduated with honors before pursuing further education. She attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she studied mathematics and proudly swam on the synchronized swimming team. She was deeply proud of her Ukrainian heritage, which remained an important part of her identity throughout her life. Dorothy began her career as a quality assurance engineer, working at Raytheon, Honeywell, and Digital Equipment Corporation. She later transitioned into sales, traveling the world and ultimately becoming an executive in the high-tech industry.
Dorothy was married to the late Paul Wemett, and she is survived by her daughters, Tracy Wemett Potter (Cory Potter), Robin Stewart, and Marie Wemett; her cherished grandchildren, Brittney Hamm (Vince), Benjamin Potter (Bailey), Clair Potter (Matthew Doerksen), and Katherine Stewart; her great grandson, Samson Hamm; her beloved brother, Brian Sawchuk (Sue); and her treasured nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Wemett; her brother, Greg Koval; her brother, Wayne Sawchuk (Annette); and her sister, Barbara Hacunda (George).
A devoted member of her church, Dorothy served faithfully at Cambridgeport Baptist Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for more than two decades. She volunteered as a greeter, ministry leader, elder, and prayer partner, and she led her beloved ladies' Bible study group for over a decade. She encouraged each member to share a prayer and a praise each week, celebrating every answered prayer with joy and writing down every need so she could act on it whenever possible.
Although she lived in Lunenburg for forty-five years and at Stone Farm Community since 2019, Dorothy never let distance diminish her commitment to her church family. When services moved online in 2020, she quickly became a leader in virtual gatherings, encouraging those who were homebound or unable to attend in person.
Dorothy embodied the spirit of generosity found in 2 Corinthians 9:7: “God loves a cheerful giver.” She was known for her kindness, determination, resilience, and joyful habit of baking treats every night. Cookies, bark, nut mix, she brought them all to Chilis, Unos, Panera, the post office, and anywhere she sensed someone needed encouragement. She never met a stranger, and her warmth and compassion touched countless lives.
One of her most cherished traditions was remembering every birthday, anniversary, and special milestone of the people she loved. Her calendar was filled every day of the year, and she made near-daily visits to the Lunenburg Post Office, where she became a beloved regular. She mailed birthday cards, thank you notes, and handwritten letters to family, friends, and often to people who simply needed reassurance that they mattered. These steady acts of handwritten love became one of her most defining gifts.
Known as "Mama Dot", "Grandma Dot", and "Aunt Dot", Dorothy created an extended family around the world through her openness, generosity, and unwavering faith. She firmly believed that if someone needed help, she was meant to be there, and she lived that belief with grace, consistency, and joy. She loved others deeply because she knew she was loved by God, and she wanted everyone she met to experience that same love.
If you would like to honor Mama Dot’s memory, please consider a donation to Cambridgeport Baptist Church or to Many Hopes. Even more fitting, cook a meal, bake a treat, or write a note of encouragement to someone this week, and she will be smiling from heaven.
