With hearts full of admiration and love, we celebrate the life of Gary MacCallum, who was born on November 7, 1952, in Holden, MA, and passed away on April 26, 2026. Gary, a humble, adventurous, and fun-loving spirit, lived a rich and fulfilling life, leaving an inspiring legacy behind for all those fortunate enough to have known him.
Gary grew up in Rutland, MA and resided in Fitchburg, MA. He dedicated his professional life to the field of education, cherishing his role as an Education Program Administrator and Principal at Keystone Educational Collaborative (formerly FLLAC Collaborative). His career spanned over four decades, also having worked at the Devereaux School in Rutland, MA, and the Robert F Kennedy Action Corps in Lancaster MA, during which he significantly impacted countless young lives with his nurturing spirit and commitment to mentorship. Gary's dedication extended beyond his professional roles. He was a guiding force in Special Olympics activities and earned his PhD in Special Education from the University of MA Amherst. He also held a BS in Education from Fitchburg State College and was a Licensed Social Worker. Though he retired in 2023, Gary's passion for education and mentorship never waned.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gary was an adventurous soul who loved hiking, mountain biking, cooking, and traveling the world. His infectious humor and humble nature made him a beloved figure among his family and friends. He always brought out the best in people and accepted them for their authentic selves. What mattered most to him were his family, friends, and caring for others.
Gary is survived by his siblings James MacCallum of Worcester, MA; Gail Christianson, and her husband Carl of Rutland, MA; Dennis MacCallum and his wife Susan of Holden, MA; Robin Campbell and her husband David from Fitchburg, MA; Abbie MacCallum of Leominster, MA; and Jack MacCallum of Worcester, MA.
