FITCHBURG – Hector J. Richard, 86, of Fitchburg Massachusetts, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, February 21st, 2023 at The Highlands, Fitchburg, after a brief illness.

Mr. Richard was born in Richibucto Village, New Brunswick, Canada son of the late Theodore and Osithe (Babineau) Richard.

Hector moved to the USA from Canada in 1962, and established his new home in Fitchburg, MA with his late wife, May (Blanchard) Richard. Shortly after relocating to the Fitchburg area, Hector was employed at Foster Grantmand remained there for 25 years before beginning a new career at Weetabix. After retirement at the age of 68, he enjoyed working out at the gym, and walking the trails at Coggshall Park. In his free time, he enjoyed watching NHL reruns, and visiting his family back home in Canada. A joy of his when visiting back home was lobster fishing and digging for clams. Hector was a parishioner at St. Joseph Church, and would attend services weekly. He enjoyed going out to breakfast every weekend with family at Karen’s Kitchen, and took great pride in being a loyal member of the Old-timer’s Bud Light Hockey League. Hector hung up his hockey skates for the last time at the age of 68, something he was very proud of.

Hector is survived by two sons, Robert Richard, of Leominster, MA, and Paul Richard (Sheri), of Ayer, MA, and three grandchildren, Derek (Meagan) Richard of Lunenburg, MA, Joshua Richard of Leominster, MA and Kirstin Richard of Ayer, MA; one great grandchild, Dylan Richard of Lunenburg, MA; his sister, Germaine Gauvin (Pete) of Moncton, N.B.; his brothers, Florie (Doris) of Bouctouche N.B., Eugere of Moncton, N.B., Roger (Rosa) of Richibucto Village, N.B., Paul (Bernice) of Richibucto Village, N.B., Maurice (Gisele) of Moncton, N.B.; and his brother-in-law, Henry of Ottawa, Ontario; and also several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his sister, Gisele Bourgeois of Ontario, and his late wife, May Richard, for whom he shared 40+ years of marriage until her death in 2004.

He will be greatly missed by his children, siblings, nieces and nephews, but mostly his grandchildren. He left behind his granddaughter, Kirstin, who held a very special place in his heart. A piece of her heart has gone with him to heaven, but the memories they shared will forever live on. They could often be found together laughing at Mr. Bean, or her two French Bulldogs, Stella and Benny, which he loved very much. He also shared a special relationship with Kirstin’s longtime boyfriend, Bryan, and never gave up a chance to share a joke or a chuckle. They often shared stories about their trips to Canada, and current hockey news. Hector’s favorite movie was requested to be shown on Christmas Eve every year, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. You could find him sitting in the recliner, laughing for hours, and he was always first to the table for Thanksgiving dinner – turkey and gravy.

Calling hours will be held from 4:00pm – 6:00pm on Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg.
