Janet M. Bailey, 76, of Boston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026. A distinguished professional, devoted family member, and cherished friend, Janet’s presence enriched the lives of many, and her loss will be felt with profound sorrow.

Born on February 2, 1950, in Kane, Pennsylvania, to the late Robert and Stella J. Bailey, Janet was raised in Washington Township, New Jersey, where she attended local schools and cultivated the intellectual discipline and curiosity that would guide her throughout her life. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University and later a Master’s degree from Boston University.

Janet began her career as a consultant with McKinsey & Company, serving in the New York office and subsequently in several locations throughout Latin America. She served as the Director of Marketing for the Handel & Haydn Society for five years. In 1997, she founded Janet Bailey Associates, a consulting practice specializing in marketing, strategic development, and communications for arts and nonprofit organizations. Her work strengthened numerous institutions and earned her deep respect within the field. She also served as a lecturer in Boston University’s graduate program in Arts Administration.

Janet lived a life enriched by broad interests and a deep appreciation for culture. An avid traveler, she explored countries across the globe. Her enthusiasm for cooking and dining was both joyful and generous, and her love of art, poetry, theater, film, and literature brought continual meaning to her life. She approached every endeavor with intelligence, creativity, and unwavering dedication.

Janet made her family a top priority. She was a devoted daughter, granddaughter, and close friend to many cousins. She traveled abroad with her cousins, introducing them to her joy of exploration and sharing adventures. The family holds cherished memories of Janet and will keep her close in their hearts.

She also valued the enduring friendships that shaped her life for more than fifty years. Her closest friendships became, in every meaningful sense, the family she chose—relationships defined by loyalty, shared history, and unwavering commitment. These lifelong connections stood as one of the great constants of her life and brought her immeasurable joy.

Janet is survived by her niece, Harper Bailey Johnston of MD, her cousins: Pam Karlene of PA, Ann Marie Curtis of PA, Joe Skerl of FL, Jim Kane of PA, Cindy Bradley of NH, Warren Bailey of ME, and her half-brother, Richard Bailey of FL.

Janet leaves a legacy marked by intellect, integrity, and a profound commitment to the arts and the nonprofit community. Her influence endures in the organizations she strengthened, the thousands of students she mentored, and the many lives she touched.

Donations may be made in Janet’s name to the Community Music Center of Boston and the Boston Foundation Arts Fund.
