Mr. Hennessey’s funeral Mass will be held from the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg on Saturday, January 17, in Saint Anthony di Padua Church at 12:00 Noon. Burial will follow in Saint Bernard’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Saturday morning from 9:30-11:30 in the funeral home.



John “Neil” Hennessey, 78, of Fitchburg passed on to his maker on January 8, 2015 in Leominster Hospital.

He was the son of James Bernard and Beatrice (Neilon) Hennessey. Neil was born and raised in Fitchburg. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Edward of Agawam and Thomas of Fitchburg, and his beloved sister Mary of Hull. Neil was very close to his nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hennessey was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean War and served at Headquarters, Far East Air Forces in Tokyo, Japan and with the Strategic Air Command in El Paso, TX.

A lifetime teacher, Mr. Hennessey instructed at schools in Corona, California and in Bolton, Ashburnham and Southeast School in Leominster. While living in Corona, CA, Mr. Hennessey was a member of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He also served as an instructor to the Corona Branch of the B.C. of A. and served as counselor and advised to the Torch Club.

Mr. Hennessey was dedicated to his profession. He related to his students as if they were family and many of them remained in touch with him until his death. One concept that he believed in and always tried to impress on his students was the following: “Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood.”

Neil loved the outdoors. He was a member of the Fitchburg Sportsmen’s Club, the North Leominster Rod and Gun Club, and held life memberships at the Leominster Sportsmen’s Association and the Fitchburg Rod and Gun Club.
