Fitchburg – John L. Chiarelli, 96, formerly of Boylston, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 in UMass Medical Center.

John was born in Clinton on June 23,1924, one of eleven children born to the late Luigi and Chiara (Leoni) Chiarelli. John grew up on his family’s farm in Boylston, where lessons of farming, hard work, and the love of family were instilled in him. He graduated from the Worcester Boys Trade School as a Mason and shortly after was inducted into the US Navy where he proudly served his country during WWII. Upon returning home after his honorable discharge, John married Marguerite “Marge” Coonan, whom he was happily married to for 71 years, until her passing in 2018. They made their home in Boylston, where they raised their family and resided for over 50 years, until moving to Fitchburg. John and Marge enjoyed their later years as snow birds, traveling to Ft. Lauderdale for 35 years.

John was a proud member of the Bricklayer’s Union for 74 years, where he worked for various companies as a talented brick mason until his retirement. Even after retirement his skills were sought out for jobs, which he happily accepted well into his 90’s. John loved to keep busy and could often be found fixing anything in need of repair.  Having a genuine gift of a green thumb, John enjoyed planting and tending his gardens every year.   The most important aspect of John’s life was his family. He always looked forward to getting together for parties and holidays, full of singing and music provided by his son, Jack, who sadly passed away on February 16, 2021.

John will be missed by his daughter Tami Chiarelli; daughter-in-law Nancy (Mills) Chiarelli; granddaughters, Carly (Chiarelli) Morrissette and husband Jon, Nicole (Chiarelli) Vasquez and husband Gonzalo, and Lindsey Chiarelli; great grandsons, Ethan and Zachary Morrissette; sisters, Nina (Chiarelli) Valera and Viola (Chiarelli) Cosimi and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Mary (Chiarelli) Ragucci, Rose (Chiarelli) Renzi, Elizabeth (Chiarelli) Marchetti, Anita (Chiarelli) Mazzaferro, Quintina (Chiarelli) Angelini, Pasquale Chiarelli, Emedio Chiarelli, and Alice (Chiarelli) Refrigeri.
