Katherine Mary Schmitt

Katherine Mary Schmitt, born on June 20, 1943, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, passed away on October 21, 2026. 

A lifelong resident of Fitchburg, Katherine was known for her generous spirit and sharp wit. Following her graduation from St. Bernard’s High School in 1961, she worked at Fort Devens, where she met her husband Dan. They were married in 1968 and spent many years living in Germany while Dan was in the Army. They celebrated 34 years of marriage until Dan's death in 2002.

Katherine was an active member of her community, contributing her time and energy to the Fitchburg Public Library, where she served as a 20-year employee until her retirement. Above all, Katherine was devoted to her family, finding her greatest joy in her grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephew. She also enjoyed spending time with her lifelong friends, Barbara McGuirk and Sheila Moran. An avid reader, she loved sewing and knitting, tending her garden, and watching the Red Sox win.

Katherine is survived by her daughter, Mary Katherine "Katie" (Bryan) Baxter; son, David (Kathryn) Schmitt; grandchildren, Benjamin, Megan, and Kiersten Schmitt; sister, Pat (Gary) Lundy; brother-in-law, Richard Wisnosky; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Katherine Buckley; her beloved husband, Daniel Schmitt; son, Robert Schmitt; brothers, John (Mary Ann), James, and Bernard (Donna) Buckley; and sister, Barbara Wisnosky.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in her name to the Fitchburg Public Library, 166 Boulder Drive, Suite 108, Fitchburg. Checks should be made payable to the Trustees of the Fitchburg Public Library.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 11 am in St. Bernard's Parish at St. Camillus, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg, MA. Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery, Fitchburg.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 26, 2026, from 4- 6 p.m. at the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg.
