Kathleen H. Marien

Kathleen (Hourigan) Marien, fondly known as "Kate", passed away at her home in Lunenburg, MA, on May 31, 2026, at the age of 83. She was predeceased by her husband of forty-four years, Dr. Paul L. Marien, and parents, James A. Hourigan and Kathryn (Mullen) Hourigan. She is lovingly remembered by daughters Lisa Harrison and husband Nick, and Michelle McCauliff and husband Peter; and beloved grandchildren Mikayla McCauliff, Chris McCauliff, Abby Harrison, and Kathryn Harrison.

Kate was born on July 29, 1942, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1960. After graduating from Anna Maria College, Kate spent two years teaching in Connecticut before marrying and focusing on raising a family. Returning to work in 1985, Kate spent twenty years with Unitil/Fitchburg Gas & Electric, retiring in 2004.

She was a devoted mother, a successful professional, and an engaged member of her community. Known for her quick wit and sense of humor, she found her greatest joy in family gatherings. Kate treasured her lifelong close friendships and was part of many social groups, which brought her joy and support throughout her life. She enjoyed reading, traveling, volunteering, and watching the Red Sox.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Kathleen Hourigan Marien Memorial Award, which will be presented annually to a Fitchburg High School senior pursuing a degree in education or teaching at a four-year college or university. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 4:00-6:00 p.m, with a funeral service / celebration of life, to start at 6:00 p.m.at the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, MA.
