*Homegoing Celebration for Lydia Ruth Carter Jones*

Lydia Ruth Carter Jones of Fitchburg, MA was called home to God on January 30, 2026 after a long life filled with many blessings. She was born on October 21, 1932, in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, to the late Florence Elizabeth Smith Carter and John Edward Carter.

Lydia was raised in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. In 1952, she married her high-school sweetheart, Cleveland Jones and they had their first son, Lonnie. During her husband’s service in the US Air Force, the family made their home in Anchorage, Alaska, where their daughters, Cynthia and Karen, were born. The family later returned to Pennsylvania, where Lydia and Cleveland welcomed their youngest son, Gerald. Many years after the birth of Gerald, the family relocated to Virginia, where they lived for many more years before eventually settling in Massachusetts.

In Massachusetts, Lydia began her professional life at Holmes Transportation, a time she enjoyed and remembered very fondly. Following her retirement, she divided her time between Massachusetts and California. She held a personal spirituality that shaped her life and she enjoyed traveling, music, theater, television, and spending time with her family.

Lydia was a beloved matriarch whose memory will be cherished by five generations of family. She is survived by her youngest sister, Eleanor, whose companionship always brought her joy and laughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleveland, and her siblings Adella, Carl, Donald, and Dorothy.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Cynthia, and her husband, Jack, and her son, Gerald and his wife, Diane, who were lovingly devoted to her care and comfort. Lydia was preceded in death by her son, Lonnie, and her daughter, Karen, who await their reunion in heaven.

Our Grammy - “Pooh” - Lydia was adored by her long line of grandchildren: Felicia (Rick); Michael (Elis); Monika (Kaden); John; Jackie Lee; Benjamin (Veronica); Joshua; Kira (Mark); Korbyn; Lukishia; and Stefan.
