It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mark Kenneth McCarthy Jr. on December 19, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Mark was born on October 18, 1960, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where he spent most of his life before recently moving to Lunenburg, MA. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, and friend, and found his greatest joy in time spent with his family. Mark was a proud graduate of Monty Tech, Class of 1979, and worked for more than 20 years as a machine operator at Mohawk Cable and Wire in Leominster, MA. He was known for his strong work ethic, kindness, humility, and quiet sense of humor.
Mark enjoyed weekends hunting at “the camp” in Vermont, golfing with his brother and nephew, listening to classic rock, and spending Sundays watching football—especially cheering on his beloved New England Patriots. Above all else, he loved his family deeply, a love that was fully returned by all who knew him.
In 2023, Mark received the extraordinary gift of a double lung transplant at NYU Langone. He met this true miracle with unmatched determination and grit, and his recovery was nothing short of remarkable. His lungs never failed him.
The transplant gave Mark three precious additional years—time that allowed him to create more memories with those he loved, strengthen family bonds, and fulfill a long-awaited bucket list trip to Ireland. His family will forever be grateful for this gift of time, and for the donor and donor family whose selflessness made it possible.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Lisa McCarthy (Tatro); his daughters, Kristen Sweeney and her husband Adam, and Nicole Arsenault and her husband Dave; and his five cherished grandchildren, Cameren Brooks, Kinsley Arsenault, Colby Arsenault, Liam Sweeney, and Emma Sweeney, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his mother, Theresa McCarthy; his siblings, Cathy Pelletier, Karen Sultan, Michael McCarthy, and Tricia Grinkis and her husband Joe; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Mark McCarthy Sr.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at St. Bernard’s Parish at St. Camillus de Lellis Church, 333 Mechanic Street, Fitchburg, MA, at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Mark’s memory to the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, in gratitude for the care that gave him more time with those he loved. The family also encourages others to consider becoming organ donors—a single decision that can save and transform countless lives, just as it did for Mark.
