Lunenburg – Mendall W. “Skip” Colburn Jr., 72, passed away December 22, in Umass Medical Center in Worcester.

Skip was born March 4, 1946 son of the late Mendall and Etha (Olsson) Colburn and lived in Lunenburg, attending Lunenburg Schools and later raising his family in the Lunenburg home built by his grandfather.

Skip loved technology and all things transportation turning his passions into careers. He owned several small business, including Skip’s Foreign Car Repair in Fitchburg and Mend-All Tools. For many years he travelled across the country instructing trainers on the vehicle inspection program used in several states including Massachusetts. He turned his fascination for airplanes into a career of flying, earning his private and commercial pilot licenses. After retiring he again took up his hobby of flying model airplanes with the Wachusett Barnstormers and Strawberry Patch clubs. Skip was a Mason and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy.

Skip loved to travel, spending summers in Kennebunk and winters in Florida or visiting family in the Southwest. He never sat for long, tinkering, fixing anything broken, or taking apart items just to see how they work. He was young at heart, just a big kid who was everyone’s favorite Uncle. Although he was always on the move, he made deep rooted friendships with neighbors in Lunenburg and Kennebunk and people he met through business and hobbies. He treated his friends as family.

Besides his dear friends, Skip leaves his wife of 31 years Laura (Fannon), daughter Melissa Lyonnais and her husband Edward of Westminster, his sister Elaine L. Eden and her husband G. Robert of Lunenburg, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and a large and loving in-law family.
