Michael J. Smith, affectionately known by many as Big Mike or Smitty, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on January 28, 1950, in Fitchburg, MA, Michael remained a loyal resident of the twin city area throughout his life. He was a resilient man, weathering life's storms with grace and humility. His thoughtful nature made him a beloved figure in his community, and his humbleness was reflected in his simple joys of life.
Michael was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and partner. His survivors include his children, Ryan (Sarah) Smith of Littleton, MA, Danielle (Brian) Bouvier of Holden, MA, and Zachary (Natalie) Smith of Leominster, MA; his grandchildren, Ronan, Bennett and Harrison Smith, and Elise and Anna Bouvier; his sister, Linda (Robert) Kalagher; his long time partner, Betty Lindsay; his ex-wife, Denise (Dennis) Howe; other loved nieces and nephews and his best friend Jeff O'Neill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Genevieve Smith, and his sister, Maureen (Billy) Gallant.
Michael was a retired salesperson from US Food Service. He was a lover of basketball and a loyal supporter of the Boston Celtics. His passion for sports extended to doing anything from the team stats for the Oakmont Women's Basketball team to shooting hoops or playing catch with his children and assistant coaching. Michael's true joys stemmed from the simplest pleasures. Michael enjoyed attending meat raffles, community fairs and shopping with Betty, reading his daily newspapers with his Dunkin Donuts coffee, spending quality time with his family and friends, visiting Compass Clubhouse during the week and dining at his favorite local restaurants. An integral part of his routine was his regular church attendance and participation in religious events.
