Peter A. Kymalainen, Sr. (“Paavo”) passed away at home on September 22, 2023.
He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and public servant to the city of Fitchburg for many years.
Peter was born on January 31, 1946 in Fitchburg, MA.
He is predeceased by his beautiful and beloved wife, Joan (Barber) Kymalainen.
He is survived by his loyal son, Peter A. Kymalainen, Jr., of Fitchburg; his devoted daughter, Jennifer (Kymalainen) O’Leary Tait and her husband, Bruce Tait, of Northborough; his former son-in-law, Timothy J. O’Leary, of Marlborough; and three beloved grandchildren: Thomas, Katherine, and Joseph O’Leary.
He is predeceased by his older brother, William Kymalainen of Fitchburg.
He served the City of Fitchburg as a Police Officer and Police Detective, protecting and serving others, with an honorable 36 year career. He retired in 2011. He valued his colleagues at the department and was a true “cop’s cop.” He reminded daughter Jennifer every day: “ Study hard; make me proud!” He was proud of his son Pete’s career at the Sheriff’s Department. He was an avid sports fan, especially the Red Sox, and he also enjoyed car shows.
He previously served in the US Army and was Honorably discharged in 1972. He was a graduate of Fitchburg High School. He was the son of Arthur and Mary (Bianchini) Kymalainen of Fitchburg.
