Roger Alden Barber

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Roger A. Barber, 91 of Fitchburg, MA. on July 20, 2026. Roger was born in Fitchburg, MA on November 24, 1934 at Lucy Helen Hospital to Helen Woodbury Barber and Albert Barber. Roger graduated from Fitchburg High School, class of 1952 Machine Shop Program. He married his high school sweetheart, June A. Davis in January 1957 and settled in Ashby, MA for 30 years before moving to Fitchburg. They recently celebrated 69 years of marriage. He served in the U.S. Army Active Reserves for six years from 1957 to 1963 as a Specialist E-5 in an Ordinance Company. He was a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Cousin.

Roger was known for his kindness, perseverance, integrity, generosity, humor, and easy-going nature. He was a skilled machinist, starting his own business, Merit Machine Mfg., Inc., in 1974. Hoping to inspire others by sharing his craft, he hosted many vocational co-op students over the years. His work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident to all. He found joy and purpose in his work and always said he “never worked a day in his life.” Throughout the years, he made many friends and could always be counted on to selflessly give of his time to resolve any problem for a customer in need. He took “early retirement” at the age of 83.

An avid car enthusiast, Roger was known for the unique cars he crafted and drove. Best known for his meticulously restored 1953 ‘British Racing Green’ Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupe, he drove to shows around New England, winning awards and accolades everywhere he went.

Roger’s life was enriched by the love and support of his family. He leaves his wife, June A. Barber of Fitchburg; his son, Ross W. Barber and wife, Wendy T. Barber of Westminster; two grandsons, Matthew R. Barber and Michael W. Barber of Westminster; his brother, Paul G. Norman of Ashburnham; Eunice Halbedel and husband Brian of Rindge, NH, and many nieces and nephews. Roger was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Helen Barber Norman Kilman, his son, David A. Barber, and his sister, Joyce (Norman) Schotanus.

Arrangements were handled by Brandon Funeral Home 305 Wanoosnoc Rd. Fitchburg, MA. A private Graveside Service was held at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, MA.
